What garage door opener repair costs

An opener that stops working is not always a dead opener. Three jobs in our records included work on an opener that stayed in place: Dunstable in September 2026, Littleton in September 2026 and Andover in August 2026. What was done on each is on the job cards below.

Emergency calls are $300 minimum, which covers the visit and the repair up to $300; a bigger repair costs the same as it would scheduled.

Test the auto-reverse once a month

The 2x4 test

Federal rules require every opener manual to tell you to test the opener monthly. Lay a 2x4 flat on the floor in the middle of the doorway and close the door with the wall button. The door must reverse when it touches the board. Test again after any change to the force or travel settings.

If the door does not reverse, do not use the opener to close it until it is fixed. Force and travel-limit adjustment is part of opener repair.

If the opener quits

Nothing happens at all
Check that the opener is plugged in at the ceiling outlet, then the breaker, then any GFCI outlet in the garage.
The wall button works but a remote does not
It is the remote's battery, not the opener.
The opener hums or clicks and the door stays put
Check the manual lock on the inside of the door. If its bar is slid into the track, the opener cannot move the door.
The motor runs but the door does not move
If someone pulled the red release cord, the door is disconnected from the opener. Push the trolley on the rail toward the door until it clicks back onto the carriage.
The car is inside and the door is fully closed
Pull the red release cord down and toward the opener, then lift the door by hand. Only do this with the door fully closed. If it feels far too heavy to lift, a spring has broken: stop and call.

How much does garage door opener repair cost?

Opener repair runs $195-$450. The low end is an adjustment or reprogramming: aligning the safety sensors, resetting the travel limits and force, or pairing remotes, keypads and your car. The high end is a replacement part such as a drive gear, trolley or logic board. You get the written price before any work starts, and a scheduled visit has no trip fee.

Should I repair or replace my garage door opener?

Repair it if the opener is under about 10 years old and the fault is a sensor, a setting or one worn part: that is $195-$450. Replace it if it is older, the motor itself has failed, or the repair would come close to the price of a new one, which is $574-$1,229 installed. We tell you which makes sense before you pay for anything.

Why does my garage door go down and then back up?

Usually the safety sensors. The two small eyes near the bottom of the tracks must see each other; if one is knocked out of line, dirty, or in direct low sun, the opener reverses the door as a safety measure. If the sensors are fine, the close force or down limit is set wrong, or something on the track is making the door bind. Aligning sensors and resetting the limits is a short, low-cost visit.

My opener hums but the door doesn't move. What's wrong?

Check the door before the opener. A broken spring makes the door far too heavy to lift, and the opener hums or strains. Do not keep pressing the button, and do not try to lift a door with a broken spring. If the springs are intact, a humming motor with no movement usually points to a stripped drive gear or a failed start capacitor, both of which are repairable on most LiftMaster and Chamberlain units.

Can you program my remotes, keypad and car to the opener?

Yes. We pair remotes, wireless keypads and car built-in buttons (HomeLink) during any opener visit, and set up the myQ app on openers that support it. If your opener is too old to work with newer remotes, we explain the options before you buy anything.
